The Art of Working Your Keywords & Keyphrases Into Your Website Copy to Improve Your Google Search Ranking

Properly using keywords and keyword phrases in your content is pretty much an art. You want your content to contain the right keywords, and to be easily understood by the user. You don’t want your readers tripping over words that are misspelled, out of place or misused all in the sake of using keywords in your content for search engines.

Google is the most popular search engine, and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a major factor that determines how your website will rank.

By incorporating keywords into your online content – including headlines, titles, and meta descriptions – you can increase the chances of your website ranking well for those specific search terms. Here are some tips to help you do this: – Include keywords in both title tags and meta descriptions – Use keywords as often as possible throughout the body of the content – Get keyword suggestions from Google’s Keyword Tool – Make sure your content is useful and interesting so readers will want to share it with others – Keep your audience in mind when choosing which words to focus on.

Research Your Keywords

Before using keywords it’s important to research them. Start with your seed keywords, then come up with a list of keywords that you know will get results based on the information you’ve discovered.

As an example, If we were a graphic design agency, we’d start with the keyword “graphic design” and see what keywords we can find related to that term. Some  examples of longer-tail seo keywords for graphic design could be “marketing graphic designer”, “graphic designers”, “graphic designer”, “graphic design resume” just to name a few. We’d then work on incorporating those into our copy in the next step.

Write Like You Talk

Many people get nervous about writing content because they think it’s difficult. But, if you can speak about your topic out loud then you can write about it. First, put together an outline that includes the keywords you’ve chosen, then write about each subheading as if you’re talking to a friend.

One of the possible keywords for the graphic design agency website in the example above is “portfolio for graphic design website” now, we wouldn’t speak like that, so using that in a sentence in your content would not be a good idea as it’s not how people talk.

Once you’re done writing, just letting it all flow out of you, take some time to go through and add the keywords you’ve decided to use for this piece of content. Add the keywords to your title, headings, subheadings, within the first 100 characters after any heading, and in the last paragraph.

Reread and Revise

Editing is key. Editing twice is probably your best bet to make sure that the keywords you use read correctly. Try reading it out loud after the final edit to ensure that the words flow and make sense within the context you use them in.

Write About Topics Important to Your Audience

The content you publish should be valued, relevant, and useful to your audience. If it’s not relevant to them it doesn’t matter how great your headline is, or even how many people click through to read it. If it’s not something they are interested in they’re not going to take action on it.

Make Some of Your Content Long Content

Long-form or cornerstone content is very important for SEO purposes. The longer your content the more you can work the keywords you want to rank for into the content. Long-form content has more room for H1 tags, subheadings, and more.

Use Analytics Strategically

Your BFF for making sure that your efforts are working are the analytics you have access to. To ensure that you’re getting good results from your efforts you need to view and have an understanding of your Google Analytics and the analytics in your email software, blogging platform, etc.

Send it out into the world

Part of SEO is self-promotion. Using social media to push out the content you’ve created will help get your content on people’s radar. It can take some time for search engines to crawl your website and start delivering your content as a search result. By promoting what you write you will encourage this process to go faster.

You know what they say about practice right?

Practice helps to get it right and the more you practice the better you’ll get. An excellent way to learn to make content that will improve your Google Search ranking is to create a swipe file of effective and optimized content that you have noticed.
